[33] International relations theory is the study of international relations (IR) from a theoretical perspective. It attempts to provide a conceptual framework upon which international relations can be analyzed. The three most prominent theo-ries are realism, liberalism and constructivism. Constructivism is a relatively new theory within international relations, which emphasizes the social over the material as the causal factor in behavior. Due to both the ontological divergence from realism and liberalism and its contemporary origins, constructivism is described in different terms by several scholars who advocate it. Constructivism is a structural theory of the international system that makes the following core claims: (1) states are the principal units of analysis for international political theory; (2) the key structures in the states system are intersubjective rather than material; and Realism, liberalism and constructivism may be the three most prominent theories of international relations, but they are by no means the only ones or the most important.
